Being Mortared and a Gunner

Writer: Rebecca WeaverRebecca Weaver
  • What does it mean to be "mortared"?

    • Attacked or bombed with shells fired from a mortar.

    • Mortar -- a weapon that provides rapid, hip-pocket, indirect fires.

      • Fires explosive projectiles (mortar bombs) at low velocities and short ranges

      • Mounted on vehicles, towed, or quick loaded to a specific launch point.

    • Basically, to be "mortared" means that your location was unexpectedly hit by an explosive device that was launched with no direct target--it's random, to quickly respond to enemy fire/attack.

  • What does a gunner do?

    • Responsible for surveillance, target acquisition, and indirect fire to engage the enemy; responsible for the operation, maintenance, and use of artillery systems (includes howitzers, mortars, radars, acoustic systems, uncrewed aerial systems, and armored fighting vehicles).

    • Able to see and scan the area better than anyone.

    • Does Jess feel guilty for not seeing/avoiding the IED that injured herself (and possibly killed/injured other members of her unit).
